Making a Mark Review

Visual Language — November 17, 2020

The "Making a Mark" begins with a story of the Chase Bank logo. Back then and even now, there is no particular symbol that would visualize the process of banking so it was decided it would be appropriate to have a mark that would show the merger of the four banks that formed one single bank that we know as Chase today. The idea of creating something abstract was the goal — something bold and that could be recognized/would stand out.

What I enjoyed the most in the podcast, was the story of getting used to a completely different mark —— John McCloy being against the bold mark but still getting used to it and liking it in the end. This story reminded me a lot of the big visual moves that Apple does up to these days. Another lesson I would bring out of the podcast would be that people react not to the mark but to the institution that it represents.

It is also worth to note what an important role the presenting the design options play —— methods of introducing things to public matter. In the podcast Tom Geismar also mentioned that it is important to have multiple options for a single design as there is no obvious right answers in most cases.
